Quavo & Murda Beatz Find Their Groove on “Trapaline”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This might be my favorite Quavo song in decades.

Quavo is looking to redeem himself with SATCHAMO after QROMELIFE fell short for plenty of listeners. I understood the criticism. That project involved a lot of experimenting, and I wasn’t convinced every direction suited him. I thought we might have to wait a while for the next release, but his latest batch of four tracks suggests he’s moving quickly.

One of my favorites is “Trapaline.” The dramatic trap production from Murda Beatz is outstanding, giving Quavo a backdrop with enough tension to make an impact. This is the kind of beat that deserves somebody who knows exactly what to do with it.

Thankfully, Quavo delivers. The chorus is extremely catchy, his choppy flow fits the production beautifully, and the lyrics remind you why slick trap talk has always been one of his strengths. He sounds confident and completely at home.

I don’t need Quavo reinventing himself every time he records. Sometimes, I just want him to get in his bag and make the song stick. “Trapaline” does that, and I think it’s one of his best tracks in a long while.
