Back in the day, DJ Kay Slay used to annoy the s**t out of me when I heard his voice on all of those bootleg rap songs. Well, these days, the New York DJ prefers to play the back, opting to release music both legally and voice-free. In Hip Hop Frontline, Kay Slay was able to create a body of work that blends authentic old school rap music with the carefree/explosive ones you hear today. With all this talk about Kanye West influencing Drake and s**t, how come love never gets given to Kid Ink for influencing so many in the game right now? In my personal opinion, he made melodic rap popular — a sound that literally every rapper in the game utilizes nowadays. Whatever the case may be, the transcendent rapper (Yea, I said it!) has decided to make his return to the music scene, dropping off a seven track EP called “Missed Calls” that features Lil Wayne, Rich The Kid and more.
