DeNard Kendricks Blesses Us With Good Raps And Laidback Vibes In “Charcoal & Lighters”

Charcoal & Lighters

DeNard Kendricks

RGM RATING (??????????)

“Charcoal & Lighters” is on DeNard’s fantastic “Tha Cookout” EP.

DeNard Kendricks is like DeAndre Hopkins on the mic: A pure beast. Though the Fort Worth, TX rapper’s catalog isn’t super extensive, his level of skills definitely makes it feel like he’s a veteran in the game. For those of you that don’t believe me, I highly recommend that you press play on Kendricks’s latest EP titled Tha CookoutIf you don’t have nine minutes to spare, at least give “Charcoal & Lighters,” the intro to the project, a shot.

“Charcoal & Lighters” is hip-hop music in its purest form. For starters, the track features this laidback/authentically southern instrumental that I can see both Wiz Khalifa and Outkast doing work over. As for DeNard, he absolutely shines, as, throughout the song, he hits us with a hypnotizing hook, super consistent flows, and lyrics that accurately describe how it feels to be a baller, a provider, a playa, and a cookout participant.

I’m not a smoker, but “Charcoal & Lighters” definitely made me want to light up a blunt and lay on a hammock with a cold beer on the side (We needed this song this summer).
