The River

RGM RATING (??????????)

A hip-hop/R&B song about anger and empowerment.

The River is a Denver-based singer, songwriter, and multi-faceted artist who has explored different formats of art. Ever since releasing her first song in June 2021, she has had her foot on the gas. The River’s latest single, “Hours,” dropped recently on January 1st.

“Hours” is about the disappointment when there’s no communication and it is not possible to make a relationship work; however, it is also about empowerment and the need to evolve throughout life. The song starts off gently with the artist talking about the frustration of being in a relationship sans communication, but, she becomes angrier throughout. Rap verses like “I’m leveled up, your brain is fucked / there’s more to life than chasing hell / you can’t save me, I’ll save myself” portray her angst.  Mixing rap verses with a sweet and appealing voice highlights The River’s very unique style. If you enjoy lo-fi angst with a touch of unfamiliarity, you can check out “Hours” below.
