Checkmate
Cordae & Hit-Boy
Songs like this remind me that Cordae’s comp is Nas.
Last night, the NFL season got off to a disappointing start. The Buffalo Bills, led by Josh Allen and Von Miller, whooped on the defending champions, the Los Angeles Rams, like they tried to break into their team bus. I’m confident that we will get better games on Sunday. I am also confident that the upcoming Madden game will be pretty solid, too. Today, a single off the game’s soundtrack, “Checkmate” with Cordae and Hit-Boy, hit streaming services.

This better be one of the songs that Cordae also keeps for himself. “Checkmate” has this triumphant vibe that gives me 2004 Roc-A-Fella feels. Ironically, Cordae switches between sounding like Cam’ron, Jay-Z, Nas, and himself throughout the song. The Hit-Boy-produced beat even gives me vintage Just Blaze feels. All in all, I think “Checkmate” is the kind of track that only rappers that know they are the s**t make.
