5. B.O.M.B.S

Jits won’t understand the significance of this track.

If you came of age in the 90s, the instrumental to “B.O.M.B.S.” might send shivers down your spine—it samples the entrance music of the Chicago Bulls during the Michael Jordan era. Fittingly, Fabolous plays a rap version of MJ on the track, delivering punchline-heavy bars about balling and dominating the competition.

For those amazed by Fabolous’ clever basketball punchlines, it’s worth noting that his rap moniker used to be ‘Fabolous Sport.’

4. Cap (Ft. Lil Durk)

You got cap in your rap!

Fabolous and Lil Durk both shine in “Cap.” The latter does a great job of hyping n***as up by gifting us with an exhilarating hook that encourages dread swinging and rowdiness. From there, I love how Fab and Durk go ham on their respective verses, letting listeners know that they are savages when it comes to confronting opps, serious when it comes to making business moves, and shameless when it comes to f**king with thirsty chicks. While Durk kills his contributions by relying heavily on his energy, Fabolous kills s**t by slyly hurling out clever bars.

3. Ooh Yea (Ft. Ty Dolla $ign)

Frizzy Fab Rogers (He sounds like a New York Drake in this song)?

“Ooh Yeah” is a sensual track in which Fabolous tries to woo his woman using Drake-like flows and many braggadocios lyrics. You can tell the Brooklyn native wanted to ensure he wasn’t being too mushy in his verses because I can hear this cocky demeanor from him throughout.

Ty Dolla $ign has practically worked with every major rap artist in the game this year. He’s also been the MVP on every song he has featured on. This time around, he gives us something that is a good mix between gutter and sly.

2. Cold Summer

This might be the best intro Fabolous has ever released.

Fabolous delivers a wealth of wisdom in “Cold Summer.” In his opening verse, he reflects on personal growth and the valuable street knowledge he’s acquired over time. He also offers Zion Williams advice on managing pressure. Transitioning to his second verse, Fabolous delves into the theme of overcoming challenges, drawing inspiration from Meek Mill’s remarkable journey of resilience and triumph. All in all, Fab’s words are definitely moving.

While the hook and audio quality attached to “Cold Summer” doesn’t completely resonate with me, the song’s earnest lyrics and dramatic atmosphere make it a compelling listen.

1. My Mind (Ft. Jacquees)

Let’s not forget that some of Fabolous’ best songs are on some R&B s**t. Well, “My Mind” is on some R&B s**t, and as expected, the track is one of the best on “Summertime Shootout 3.”

“My Mind” is powered by this nostalgic R&B beat that you’re going to love. The good news is this: Both Jacquees and Fabolous deliver standout performances over it. Jacquees’ silky smooth hook sets the mood perfectly, while Fabolous’ raw verses add depth and silkiness to the song, creating a captivating blend of R&B and rap that will resonate with listeners.

OVERALL RATING

(C+)

I think Summertime Shootout 3 is Fabolous’ best album since Loso’s Way. Across its tracks, he showcases every facet of his persona, from the streetwise rapper to the romantic crooner to the wise elder imparting valuable life lessons.

Despite not always being included in discussions about top-tier rappers, Fabolous proves his lyrical prowess on this album, delivering punchlines with precision and flows with finesse. While he occasionally ventures into singing territory, it reflects the current musical landscape, and he handles it confidently.

The production on the album is stellar, featuring a diverse range of beats that span from hard-hitting to soulful. This variety ensures that the album remains interesting throughout.

While the album has numerous features, each one serves a purpose, whether providing smooth R&B vocals or injecting youthful energy into the tracks. Though some collaborations may feel forced, the overall quality of the features enhances the listening experience.

With Summertime Shootout 3, 41-year-old Fabolous asserts that age is just a number and that he’s poised to continue making impactful music for years.
