Honorable Mention. KARMA (Ft. Isaiah Rashad)

I really didn’t think SiR and Isaiah Rashad would sound this good together.

In “KARMA,” SiR discusses his personal growth, mental health, and how fame has changed everything for him. He also talks about learning from his mistakes, particularly pointing out how he needs to change his approach to dealing with hoes. As for Isaiah Rashad, his verse is on the reckless side and not as introspective as SiR’s. He talks about counting up paper and putting hoes in their places.

The smooth production, which gets its power from pulsing piano keys and kick drums, is perfect for SiR’s captivating vocals and Isaiah’s chill raps.

5. LIFE IS GOOD (Ft. Scribz Riley)

I would believe it if SiR told me he had never had a bad day.

“LIFE IS GOOD” exudes a breezy spirit that can uplift your mood in an instant. With serene production and lyrics promoting carefree living, along with extremely laidback vocals, the song is perfect for cruising down a highway.

4. NO EVIL

SiR sounds like Cruella De Vil in this track.

In “NO EVIL,” SiR confronts a woman who enjoys breaking down men. He issues a warning, expressing his readiness to explore the depths of her emotions while questioning her true intentions in their interactions.

What stands out to me the most in “EVIL WAYS” is the primary voice SiR adopts in the song; it’s on some Cruella de Vil s**t. When he switches from this voice, he delivers his signature emotive vocals that cut through any production. Speaking of production, the song is driven by this slick, extremely impactful backdrop. I definitely don’t want you to ignore that aspect.

Only SiR is making songs that sound like this…

3. BRIGHTER

This song swept past my ears and deeply touched my soul.

After listening to “BRIGHTER,” I feel like I can skip church on Sunday. Everything about the song sounds divine, from the church-like piano to the subtle choir in the background to the motivational lyrics emphasized in the chorus. SiR’s vocals sound as organic as ever and are too impactful to brush off. Wow, this song hit me differently.

2. I’M NOT PERFECT (Ft. Ab-Soul)

Telling a chick that “you’re not perfect” is such a good pickup line.

So, here’s the thing: Throughout this album, we get several versions of SiR. In “I’M NOT PERFECT,” we are treated to the version of the singer that has no added preservatives. Instead, in the song, he puts up a truly pure vocal performance that I think perfectly complements his lyrical content about being the best man for his partner. As for Ab-Soul, I absolutely love that he is on this track. His verse adds some well-needed bluntness, wise words, and complexity to the equation.

Ironically, this song is perfect…

1. SATISFACTION

I will never not be blown away by “SATISFACTION.”

“SATISFACTION” emerges as one of the most enthralling R&B tracks of the year. SiR’s passionate vocals captivate from the start, pulling listeners into an immersive experience akin to sinking into quicksand. The song’s production exudes a bluesy ambiance, delivering emotional blows that resonate deeply. Combined with SiR’s lyrical exploration of the challenges in satisfying someone you deeply care about, the result is pure R&B gold.

RGM RATING

(B) (85%)

At this point, I’m ready to call SiR a GOAT. His exceptional voice, ability to evoke emotions, and talent for soothing listeners are undeniable. In HEAVY, SiR shines.

What I love about this album is undoubtedly SiR’s exceptional vocals. However, it’s important not to overlook how he utilizes his voice in various ways throughout the album. In tracks like “LIFE IS GOOD,” he infuses it with positive vibes, while in songs like “NO EVIL,” he adopts a darker, almost villainous tone reminiscent of a storybook antagonist. This level of versatility keeps the album engaging and never dull.

SiR’s vocals shine brilliantly on this album, but let’s not overlook the exceptional production. The beats on HEAVY are pure, organic, and span multiple genres. The synergy between SiR and the production is undeniable. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship where the production elevates SiR’s vocals, and the production thrives with SiR’s emotive delivery.

What I absolutely love about this album is how SiR strikes a perfect balance between themes. He doesn’t overuse the theme of heartbreak, nor does he come off as a fake thug R&B singer. Instead, he seamlessly blends feel-good lyrics, romantic themes, and reflections on the everyday challenges adult black men face. This balance showcases SiR’s authenticity and avoids veering into overly sentimental territory, despite his strong vocals that could have tempted him to do so.

We need to point it out when we encounter a unique musician like SiR. His music sounds like some original s**t that no one in the game is making.

He’s one of the greatest songwriters ever. Ricky’s song could’ve easily been cheesy, but it’s a banger that’s both personal and broad for young men.

    1. Quincy

I agree. He has such a good command of his strengths as both a singer and person.
