Doja Cat continues to have a helluva time with the release of “Scarlet 2 CLAUDE.”

3. OKLOSER

Us: Are we in high school? Doja Cat: B*tch, we might be.

I really, really like it when Doja Cat is petty and raps over playful beats; she does just that in “OKLOSER.” While you might skim over my initial sentence, it’s important to note that her rap style in the song isn’t all light-hearted. I admire how she approaches the beat with formidable force, maintains a consistent flow, exudes vibrant energy, and effortlessly dismisses her opps. However, I have one criticism: the line “Rock wanna rock me” felt a little weak.

2. PISS

Do you know that Jay-Z meme in which he hesitantly shakes his head while listening to a song performed before him? I did that while listening to “PISS.”

Let’s state the obvious first: This song’s title threw me off. I was afraid Doja Cat was going to go the PornHub route with this s**t. However, she only associates the word “Piss” with her yellow diamonds. Another aspect that caught me off guard was her whispery rapping style throughout the song. However, as the track progresses, it begins to complement the hazy yet booming production perfectly. What didn’t surprise me was Doja’s rap verse towards the end; it provided a fitting conclusion to the song. Given time, I believe this track will become my favorite from this project.

1. URRGE!!!!!!!!!! (Ft. A$AP Rocky)

Doja Cat opening this song by saying, “f**k them kids,” made me spit out my Smacks this morning.

I’m completely joking; I don’t eat Smacks. That cereal is mid. What’s not mid is this track. “URRGE!!!!!!!!!!” is an edgy banger that has a beat designed to make grounds shake (I’m sure people in New York aren’t trying to hear that right now), a very rebellious verse and a hard-ass chorus by Doja Cat, and a vintage verse by A$AP Rocky in which he switches his flow a few times and explains for the 1000th time how much he’s the s**t and can’t be flushed. All in all, this is definitely a song for old-school Rocky fans (Which I am).

OVERALL RATING

(B-) (81%)

Doja Cat’s ‘I don’t give a s**t’ meter is really high. Out of all the artists that are poppin’ right now, I feel like she does whatever she wants the most often. To me, she has a bigger green light than Luka Doncic, y’all.

What captivates me about this project is the unpredictable nature of Doja Cat’s sound. She keeps listeners guessing with every track, never adhering to one particular style or approach. Specifically, you never know what flow she’ll employ, when she’ll transition between singing and rapping, or what type of beat she’ll tackle next. It’s an exhilarating experience trying to decipher the meaning behind tracks like “PISS” and understanding how they are supposed to resonate with audiences. I wholeheartedly believe that we could use more unpredictability in music—it keeps things fresh and exciting.

Another aspect of this project I appreciate is Doja Cat’s commitment to rapping. She doesn’t hold back; instead, she delivers powerful flows, maintains a competitive edge, and embodies the persona of a seasoned, veteran rapper convincingly. While I wish she explored a few more topics and perhaps refined her punchlines, the bottom line is that she brings her A-game. That’s ultimately the most significant takeaway from her performance.

After two straight releases with some very authentic rap tracks, I’m ready to proudly proclaim Doja Cat my favorite female rapper in the game today.
