Rating: 3.5 out of 5.It’s wild to think that Lil Tecca would one day surpass A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie in popularity, but that’s exactly what has happened. Checking their Spotify stats, you’ll notice that Tecca has officially topped him in monthly streams. And here’s the kicker: I actually believe Tecca is producing slightly better music than A Boogie. Today, Tecca returned to the music scene with two new singles: “Number 2” and “Never Last.” I’m vibing with both tracks.
“Number 2” is a dedication to all the women who are comfortable with being Tyrese Maxey, aka a second option. In other words, in the track, Tecca asserts he’s more focused on casual connections than committing. He also tries to convince us that he’s the type to steal other men’s partners. I find the chorus he lays down to be excellent, and his carefree delivery is inspiring, especially when paired with the mesmerizing trap production.
“Never Last” shares a production style reminiscent of “Number 2,” yet diverges in its content. Here, Tecca delves into his experience dealing with deceitful women and troublesome individuals. While I appreciate his frenetic rap delivery in the verses, I feel the hook could have been stronger. Nevertheless, the track’s overall smoothness still makes it a solid addition to his repertoire.
Lil Tecca’s growth needs to be acknowledged.
