Kalis Uchis – ORQUÍDEAS PARTE 2
(B+)
Kalis Uchis is on fire.
Kali Uchis is my favorite person from Alexandria, VA—my least favorite is Noah Lyles. Anyway, under everyone’s nose, Kali’s been quietly racking up successes. Earlier this year, she dropped ORQUÍDEAS, and just this past Friday, she added four new tracks to the album. The new additions include “Adicto,” a mesmerizing banger; “Young Rich & In Love,” a spicy track produced by KAYTRANADA; “Simple,” a smooth banger with hypnotizing vocals; and “Como Debe Ser,” an authentic Latin track.
J Balvin – Rayo
(B+)
I’m going to ask the government to extend the summer a few months.
J Balvin is back with a new fifteen-track project titled Rayo. While I might not be the most qualified to review it, I did it anyway because why not?
The first thing that hits you about this album is its energy. From the moment you hit play, you’re greeted by the high-energy “Cosa De Locos.” The album then takes you through the sly and punchy “Polvo de tu Vida,” the high-octane “Doblexxó,” and the hauntingly fun “La Noche.”
So here’s my advice: Even if your Spanish skills are a bit rusty, like mine, toss this album on in the background and let the vibes take over.
Favorite tracks: “La Noche,” “Doblexxó” & “Polvo de tu Vida.”
Ravyn Lenae – Bird’s Eye
(B)
Ravyn Lenae flies high in this album.
Ravyn Lenae may not be the first person you think of when it comes to alternative R&B; however, I do think she deserves your attention. In Bird’s Eye, she showcases her touching voice, talks about love, heartbreak, and everything in between in very unique ways, and delivers a myriad of sounds that I think push this genre forward. Overall, this eclectic body of work is versatile as hell and boundariless.
Favorite Tracks: “One Wish,” “Candy,” and “Dream Girl”
