Uh oh…
Joey Bada$$ is undeniably one of the best rappers in the game, and if you don’t recognize that, you might need to recalibrate your ears. While he excels in delivering punchlines and flows with that old-school hip-hop vibe that I adore, it’s his competitiveness that elevates him to a whole new level. His recent track, “The Ruler’s Back,” exemplifies this bold energy.
Joey doesn’t hold back at all—he’s talking straight s**t. From throwing shade with lines like “Too much West Coast d*ck lickin'” to claiming that someone’s “arms are too short to box with him,” it’s clear he’s asserting dominance. He goes even further, saying, “I got murals in my city, f**k a nomination,” and confidently declaring himself the “King of New York.” This track is all about staking his claim and making sure everyone knows he’s in the conversation.

Joey Bada$$ seems to be throwing subtle shots at Kendrick Lamar in this freestyle, and honestly, I think it’s intentional. Hip-hop thrives on competition, and with Kendrick standing at the pinnacle of the game, it’s natural for others who feel they’re up to the challenge to take a swing. Also, I have no problem with Joey staking his claim or even dubbing himself the King of New York—it’s the confidence an artist needs. That said, I’m hoping he follows up this bold talk with more consistent releases to solidify his case.
Ever since Joey Bada$$ whooped his opp, he’s been acting differently.
