This might be the most exquisite diss record of all time.
A few days ago, Joey Bada$$ threw shots at Kendrick Lamar and the entire West Coast in his track “The Ruler’s Back.” While I didn’t expect Kendrick to be the first to respond—if he even responds at all—I did not doubt that others from the West would step up.
Sure enough, Daylyt took his turn, delivering subtle disses at Joey Bada$$ in his new track “Hiyu.” If you remember, Daylyt was all over the Kendrick vs. Drake beef, offering his play-by-plays on what he thought would go down almost daily. Now, it’s his turn to get his rap knuckles bloodied, throwing his own punches in the game.
In “Hiyu,” Daylyt drops some clever, subtle disses aimed at Joey Bada$$ that you might miss if you’re not paying attention. Lines like “STEEZ on my arm, we came for capital,” “To my niggas out in Harlem, thanks for all that you’ve done, To them niggas over the bridge, we tell ’em ‘Don’t be dumb,'” and “The West up, but I’ll never dub y’all, for real” are laced with indirect shots at the New York rapper. What’s really interesting is how Daylyt shifts between an underdog mindset and a more confident, heavyweight vibe—playing with his position in the game while still throwing in those sly jabs.
While Daylyt’s lyrics are undeniably hard-hitting, the track itself has a relaxed, laidback feel. The soothing, soulful beat drives the song, and his unbothered delivery lets the raps flow effortlessly. It feels like a warning shot—calm on the surface, but there’s more heat on the way.
