On This Day in Hip-Hop Culture (11/1): Takeoff, Lil Peep & Lil Uzi Vert

These are the defining hip-hop events that made history today.

1. Takeoff’s Unfortunate Death (November 1, 2022)

Takeoff, one-third of the iconic Atlanta rap trio Migos, was tragically shot and killed on November 1, 2022, in Houston, Texas.

To many fans, Takeoff was seen as the most skilled rapper in Migos — the quiet powerhouse who never fully got the spotlight he deserved. In the months leading up to his tragic passing, he was finally stepping into his own, showcasing his talent in a major way on Only Built for Infinity Links, the joint project with Quavo that dropped just weeks before his death. Long Live Rocket.

2. Lil Uzi Vert Dropped “ETERNAL ATAKE 2” (November 1, 2024)

On this day in 2024, Lil Uzi Vert finally unleashed the highly anticipated Eternal Atake 2, a 16-track project that arrived with no real features (and no, Big Time Rush doesn’t count). The album showcases Uzi in full control—eclectic, energetic, and unpredictable as ever. Is it our favorite Uzi album? Hell no. I actually think he made it to get out of his record deal. Nonetheless, it’s in his catalog and was memorable.

Standout tracks: “Chill Bae,” “Conceited,” and “PerkySex.”

3. Lil Peep’s Birthday (November 1, 1996)

Lil Peep was truly ahead of his time—an artist who blurred genres and emotions in ways few dared to. Sadly, his life was cut short by a tragic drug overdose before he could fully reach his potential. It’s wild to think how different the hip-hop landscape might look today if Peep, XXXTentacion, and Juice WRLD were all still here. The game would’ve evolved in a whole new direction.

4. Mac Dre Passed Away (November 1, 2004)

Tragically, Mac Dre was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2004.

Mac Dre, born Andre Louis Hicks on July 5, 1970, is a Bay Area icon whose music helped put the region’s sound on the global map. His influence is undeniable, with artists like Drake paying tribute to him in their music, proving that Mac Dre’s legacy still resonates worldwide.
