If Wale is making music like this, I’m going to have to take the whole week off work when his album drops.
In less than two weeks, Wale will release his highly anticipated album everything is a lot. So far, the singles we’ve heard from him — whether they’ll make the final tracklist or not — have been outstanding (my personal favorite is “Blanco”). This past weekend, he dropped a new single with Odeal called “City On Fire,” and I think it’s one of his best releases in years.
“City On Fire” features production with a helluva knock, but at the same time, some R&B flair that gives it a tender, sensual feel. Featured guest Odeal delivers a highly infectious chorus that elevates the track into special territory. As for Wale, he drops a few slick verses about the messy relationship he’s in — one filled with hypocrisy, wild club nights, and unadulterated wahala.
Overall, “City On Fire” is a soulful, relatable, and lyrically sharp record that feels like classic Wale energy. If this is a taste of what everything is a lot will sound like, we might be in for something special.
