Wale Glides Effortlessly on “Belly,” Flipping a Classic Soul Sample

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Wale might f**k around and save hip-hop, y’all.

When Wale drops his new album Everything Is A Lot, I’ll be there—even if I have to abandon my parenting responsibilities for a few hours temporarily (I’m just kidding, guys! He’s going to help me write a review for the album).

So far, I’ve really enjoyed the singles he’s released, such as “Blanco” and “City On Fire,” and his latest one flips a classic beat in a way only Wale can.

“Belly” features smooth production—smoother than Gary Coleman’s hair—built around the iconic “Back To Life” sample by Soul II Soul (I wonder how many people actually know who made “Back To Life.” It’s one of those joints you hear and completely forget who made it). Over the laid-back, soulful groove, Wale delivers his signature introspective bars, reflecting on hate, competition, and lessons learned throughout his journey.

Though he glides through the track with ease, his flow still hits with hunger and intent, like an emcee who’s got something to prove all over again.
