YouTube Pulls Out of Billboard Charts Amid Backlash Over New Streaming Rules

The backlash against Billboard’s newly updated streaming formula has already begun.

Following Billboard’s recent rule change that gives greater weight to paid subscription streams over ad-supported streams, YouTube has announced it will remove its data from Billboard charts starting January 16, 2026. The decision comes after what YouTube describes as years of discussion and disagreement over how streams are valued.

In a statement, YouTube criticized Billboard’s methodology as outdated, arguing that it fails to reflect how fans actually engage with music today.

“Billboard uses an outdated formula that weights subscription-supported streams higher than ad-supported. This doesn’t reflect how fans engage with music today and ignores the massive engagement from fans who don’t have a subscription,” the platform said.

YouTube emphasized that every stream should be counted equally, regardless of whether it comes from a paid or ad-supported listener.

According to YouTube, the decision to walk away wasn’t made lightly. After more than a decade-long partnership and what they describe as extensive talks, Billboard reportedly remained unwilling to make meaningful changes to the system. As a result, YouTube chose to remove itself entirely rather than continue supporting a model it believes undervalues a huge portion of music fans.

While it’s definitely disappointing to see a platform as massive as YouTube pull out of the Billboard ecosystem, the frustration is understandable. Ad-supported listeners still stream, share, and support music in real ways — and this move raises serious questions about how success should be measured in today’s streaming-first era.
