Caskey takes a serious left turn on “One Eye Open,” and we’re here for it. This track comes flying out of the gate with a frantic rock instrumental that feels restless, aggressive, and completely alive. Over that production, Caskey explores breaking free from “the machine,” trying to find solace anywhere possible, and dealing with the paranoia that can come from protecting who you are.

The performance is easily one of my favorite parts. There’s genuine passion throughout the song, and Caskey sounds like he actually means every word rather than simply performing the material. I also really enjoy the melodies because they give the track a surprisingly infectious quality despite the darker themes. Then there’s that chorus, which I think is ridiculously catchy.

Produced by longtime collaborator WLPWR, “One Eye Open” showcases Caskey stepping confidently into alternative rock while still maintaining the honest songwriting that has followed him throughout his career. With More Alive Than Ever on the horizon, this feels less like an experiment and more like Caskey opening another door creatively. I’m curious to see where he takes it next.
