Vince Staples Gets Fierce and Fearless on “Blackberry Marmalade”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

After seeing what happened at the White House Correspondents’ dinner last night, this music video is creepy as hell.

Vince Staples has always been one of rap’s most valuable voices. Beyond being a phenomenal lyricist, he is the kind of artist who rarely drops music without intention. Whether he is speaking on trauma, identity, or the absurdity of modern life, Vince usually has something real to say. His latest single, “Blackberry Marmalade,” is no exception.

This track finds Staples stepping into alternative rock territory, with a punk-leaning instrumental that packs urgency and raw energy. The tempo races forward, giving Vince plenty of room to glide across the chaos. Instead of relying strictly on bars, he mixes in a wavy melodic delivery with bursts of rapping, making the song feel both hypnotic and confrontational.

Lyrically, Vince tackles heavy realities. He speaks on systemic oppression, racism, and the constant pressure placed on Black communities to survive inside structures never built for them. It is angry, reflective, and painfully relevant.

The music video adds another intense layer. Shot from the perspective of a first-person shooter, the visual is deeply unsettling and clearly designed to force conversation around violence, race, and fear in America.

“Blackberry Marmalade” is not easy listening, nor is it supposed to be. Vince Staples uses discomfort as a tool, turning pain into art and protest into sound.
