JPEGMAFIA’s love for music and destruction is admirable.
JPEGMAFIA is prepping to release an album called Experimental Rap this week. He says he chose the title as a dig at rappers who claim they are experimental. He must be dissing himself too, because he’s about as experimental as it gets.
In his latest single, “¥ (Yen),” the experimentation is turned all the way up. The track features a more static-filled and chaotic version of Lil Scrappy and Young Buck’s “Money In The Bank” beat, while JPEGMAFIA delivers a frantic, nearly inaudible rap performance as he talks about the power of money, dealing with scandalous women, and putting dudes in their places.
From a nostalgic standpoint, the track hits. I mean, that “Money In The Bank” beat is fire. As for the overall sound, if you can get past it sounding like a Nintendo game cartridge that needs to be blown into, it’s enjoyable.
