Breaking Benjamin releases the second single from their upcoming album, marking their first album release in six years.
If you like rock music from the 2000s or “divorced dad rock,” do I have some news for you! Breaking Benjamin is finally back to releasing music since their last single, “Awaken,” dropped in 2024, seemingly leading into their new album. It’s about time! The fans are excited. I’m excited!
Breaking Benjamin is a rock/alt-rock band that debuted in 1999. Their hits “The Diary of Jane,” “Breath,” and “I Will Not Bow” are absolutely timeless and have been streamed billions of times for good reason.
Let’s get into it. Breaking Benjamin released “Something Wicked” in the middle of the week, following their recent festival performance where the song debuted. I love the band’s ability to create an ambiance in both the opening and ending of the song. I will admit it took me more than one listen to really appreciate it because it’s not one of my favorites in their discography, but I do enjoy it.
This one honestly pushes their sound in a slightly new direction while still feeling rooted in the style that made the band famous. “Something Wicked” is heavy on instrumentation and screaming/belting. I’m a big fan of the vocals alternating between soft yet powerful moments and intense belting. Something I found particularly fun was the small reference to Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” where the witch says, “Something wicked this way comes.” Personally, the more I listen to it, the better it gets.
“Something Wicked” makes me wonder what the rest of the album might sound like. In the meantime, give the song a listen or two below.
