A raw NBA YoungBoy release blending pain, aggression, and melodic sampling.
I’m still on an NBA YoungBoy high after listening to his latest project ML2. I thought it was one of his most experimental and enjoyable projects in a while. Now, he’s back with a new random release called “Try So Hard.”
The track features an extra emotional, flipped version of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “I Tried” instrumental, paired with trap elements and a strong, heavy knock. The production honestly almost had me shedding grown-man tears.
The chorus sees YoungBoy reinterpreting an Akon hook, but instead of a nostalgic or uplifting take, he delivers it with a numb, almost disconnected energy. Across his verses, he leans into aggressive but reflective storytelling, addressing personal mistakes and expressing regret toward those he has hurt.
Though I can’t say I love the hook, I do really like the production and the passionate verses. I would play the track again.
