Rico Nasty Delivers Explosive Punk-Rap Energy On “Cupcake”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

A reminder that sometimes the sweetest titles come with the hardest punches.

Rico Nasty is back in full attack mode with “Cupcake,” an explosive new single produced by Kenny Beats. The good news is that it isn’t as wild as her previous single “You Can’t Run From Me,” which almost gave me a seizure.

Kenny Beats once again proves why he and Rico have become such a reliable duo. The production on “Cupcake” pairs booming percussion with distorted textures, creating a sound that feels like Rico wandering through Wonderland with Molly in her hands.

Lyrically, Rico wastes no time reminding listeners why she’s remained one of rap’s most fearless personalities. She packs the song with razor-sharp punchlines, confident flexes, and the kind of rebellious attitude that has always defined her music. As a fellow DMVer, her s**t-talking in particular resonated with me mightily (F the rest of you mere Americans).

I think Rico Nasty is incredibly talented and doesn’t get nearly enough love, so seeing her ramp up her output over the past couple of weeks has brought a smile to my face. Even if you’re not already a fan, I think “Cupcake” has the kind of commercial appeal that could easily win you over.
