Benny Blanco Says He and Selena Gomez Secretly Dated for Months Before Going Public
Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez dated in secret “for a long time.”
The couple, who married in September 2025, went public with their romance in December 2023. However, the 38-year-old producer has admitted they had been seeing each other for quite some time before letting fans know about their relationship. The Only Murders in the Building actress also acknowledged that her fame would bring a great deal of scrutiny once they went public.
Speaking to Spain’s El País newspaper, he said: “We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months.
“And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’
“And then I said, ‘You know what? Screw it.’ We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”
Benny admitted he is still getting to grips with the level of fame he has experienced because of his marriage to the 33-year-old star.
He said: “I don’t like to expose my life. Famous people are under constant scrutiny. If you say one thing, it’s wrong, and if you say another, it’s also wrong.”
He admitted he would “like to have more privacy,” but he is part of “that transitional generation where social media didn’t exist when I was a child.” As a result, while he largely focuses on sharing content related to his music career, he will “occasionally post a picture of my wife or some delicious dish I’ve tried.”
Benny and Selena had been friends for years before their relationship turned romantic, and the “Eastside” hitmaker recently recalled how his mother, Sandra Levin, encouraged him to date the singer and actress back in 2019.
Speaking on his Friends Keep Secrets podcast, he recalled: “I’m shooting a video with Selena. I’m dating someone else, OK?
“My mom’s on the video shoot, and she says, she’s just sitting there, she’s like, ‘Hon, you should marry Selena.’
“And I was like, ‘What?’ And she was like, ‘You should be dating someone like Selena.’”
Although he and Selena were friendly, they were not “best friends,” but Benny really enjoyed spending time with the “Lose You to Love Me” hitmaker.
He said: “There were like two times in my life where I left a specific session or a late-night video with her where I was like, ‘Wow, she’s so cool. She’s, like, really cool.’”
Benny confirmed that Sandra “planted the seed” for him and Selena to get married after Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul, 46, asked if his mom had done so.
He added: “She was like, ‘She’s got her head on her shoulders.’ She was like, ‘She’s so sweet, she’s this and that.’
“Everyone says you always marry your best friend. That’s how it works. And she’s my f****** best friend.”
