It’s Rod Wave season.

Rod Wave is one of the biggest artists in the game (no pun intended), and I think that’s because he doesn’t flood the streets with meaningless music. Instead, he comes back when something feels right to him. Well, something is definitely feeling right because he’s preparing to drop a new project called Don’t Look Down. His latest single from it is “Hustle.”

“Hustle” features production with an overwhelming amount of bass and some trap roots, but it also has soothing elements that give the track a reflective feel. I don’t know about you, but my speakers couldn’t handle it. Rod Wave comes through with a grittier sound than we’re used to hearing as he talks about having a quick temper, making the right moves in the streets, and paying homage to some of his day-one homies.

Towards the end, he brings out the soulful singing we’ve come to expect from him, repeatedly reminding listeners that he’s a hustler who gets things done when it needs to get done. I think the track is cool, but it’s far from the type of commercial record designed to get everyone excited. However, that’s also what makes Rod Wave unique. He has always had an unconventional rollout and moves on his own timing.
