Brent Faiyaz is currently the most fascinating R&B artist out there.

One of the most underrated listens of the year, in my opinion, was Brent Faiyaz’s Icon. It marked a pretty major creative pivot, with Brent embracing a grander, more cinematic sound than we’re used to hearing from him. While some publications inexplicably hated on the project, I thought it showcased exactly the kind of artistic growth I wanted to see.

Now, Brent is expanding the experience with Icon (Director’s Cut), adding three more tracks to the album: “fallin’.”, “like it was.”, and “suave.” featuring Tokischa. What’s cool is that each song brings its own flavor to the table.

“fallin’.” is easily my favorite of the bunch, thanks to its laid-back, beachside vibe that makes it impossible not to unwind. “like it was.” taps into classic slow jam territory, while “suave.” blends Latin influences with a sample that instantly reminded me of Lloyd’s “You.”

These additions don’t reinvent Icon, but they do serve as a reminder that Brent Faiyaz is still that dude.
