Dr. Dre believes AI can become another creative tool for musicians willing to embrace new technology.

Dr. Dre has confirmed that he’s using AI in his music-making process, becoming one of the latest major artists and producers to publicly embrace the technology. Rather than treating AI as a threat to creativity, Dre believes it represents another tool that musicians can use to create, experiment, and potentially push their work somewhere new.

“I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating,” Dre said. He added, “It’s a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things.”

Dre is joining a growing group of music figures who have publicly supported AI, including Timbaland. The debate has become even more intense after artists such as Tyga and Fenin Flexin admitted to using AI in their recent music, with Tyga receiving significant criticism over his decision.

For me, this conversation is a little different because of my IT background. I see AI as something that’s going to stick around and become heavily integrated into the way we work. Music is not going to magically escape that evolution. At some point, artists and listeners are going to have to decide which uses feel acceptable and which ones cross the line.

I’m personally lukewarm on AI when it comes to main vocals, especially when everybody seems to be using that same voice I’m already sick of hearing. But using AI for effects, experimentation, or small creative elements? I can understand that.

We don’t know exactly how Dre is using the technology yet, but his co-sign is significant. Whatever his process looks like, I’m willing to believe he’s approaching it with some level of responsibility.
