I’m pretty sure Tee isn’t talking about yams with corned beef stew…
Tee Grizzley isn’t reinventing himself on “Back Ina Yams,” and frfr, he doesn’t really need to. The Detroit rapper has spent years mastering his lane, and this track gives him another opportunity to showcase that confidence. This time around, he talks about spending more money than Steve Ballmer, enjoying the rewards of his hard work, and finding common ground with the demons he grew up with.
The production is easily one of my favorite parts because it sounds like some Detroit-styled horror movie s**t. The combination of eerie piano keys and that rattling beat creates an atmosphere that feels like something is lurking around the corner. Tee responds to it with plenty of energy, jumping between different pockets while maintaining the authoritative presence that has become such a big part of his style.
“Back Ina Yams” may sound familiar to anyone who has followed Tee for years, but his charisma and fiery delivery keep the formula from feeling stale. With They Forgot dropping September 25, let’s see if/how he decides to double down on it.
