Westside Gunn Drops New Single “ZILLA” Ahead of Upcoming Project

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Westside Gunn is rapping more and more these days.

Do you know what’s funny? There was a time when Westside Gunn actually said he was going to retire. Since then, he’s continued dropping music, and now he has another project on the way. To get us hyped for it, he decided to drop a new single called “ZILLA.”

“ZILLA” features production with a boom-bap foundation, but it also carries a strange, buzzing energy that reminds me of that bizarre scene in Amityville where the reverend is taking a dump in the bathroom with flies all around him.

Over the production, we get your typical Westside Gunn subject matter. He raps about being rich, moving around questionable individuals, and being the flyest rapper alive. He also throws in a hilarious line about Off-Whites being sold in Costco.

While Gunn still gives us those trademark wacky vocals, I think he steps up his actual rapping quite a bit here. He’s not just coasting on his personality or production choices. He’s really spitting on this one, and that makes “ZILLA” an exciting preview of what he has coming next.

Given the current state of hip-hop, Westside Gunn’s style of music is sounding more and more normal, to me.
