Tinashe balances playful seduction and emotional independence while previewing the versatility of “POPSTAR.”
Tinashe has a lot going on right now. Today, it was announced that she will share the stage with Harry Styles during the Phoenix stop of his tour. She also released two spankin’ new singles: “Pillow Fight” and “I’d Rather Be Alone.”
“Pillow Fight” sounds pretty raw, but there is plenty to like about it. In particular, whenever Tinashe taps fully into her singer bag, she sounds fantastic. She also uses a cool, understated delivery to entice someone into her room, cleverly playing the role of an innocent despite her pretty diabolical intentions. The record moves at a smooth pace, feels appropriately seductive, and delivers several catchy moments.
“I’d Rather Be Alone” takes a more emotional route. It reminds me of Rihanna’s “Kiss It Better,” carrying that same melting, passionate ballad energy that practically forces you to remain glued to every note. Tinashe makes it clear that she would rather protect her peace than continue waiting for an inconsistent man to get his act together.
The two tracks succeed for completely different reasons. One is playful and seductive; the other feels vulnerable and decisive. Based on that contrast, Tinashe’s forthcoming album, POPSTAR, should showcase plenty of versatility when it arrives on September 25.
