Tee Grizzley and Skilla Baby Sample Ashanti on “Rain”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a f**king hit.

Tee Grizzley has a formula that he abuses. Thankfully, every once in a while, he steps away from it and creates something that feels special. His new single “Rain,” featuring Ashanti and Skilla Baby, is one of those moments.

The track reimagines Ashanti’s “Rain on Me” through a trap lens, keeping her chorus and ad-libs at the center. As for Tee Grizzley and Skilla Baby, they deliver slick, charismatic verses about the flabbergasting amounts of money they are prepared to spend on exotic dancers. Their chemistry remains excellent, their deliveries are sharp, and neither artist gets in the other’s way.

Ashanti does not contribute a new verse, but her sampled presence gives the collaboration its identity. Between the recognizable hook, polished production, and effortless performances from Tee and Skilla, “Rain” sounds 1,000 percent like a hit. I’m officially looking forward to Tee’s next album (I wasn’t before).
