Dominic Fike is trading chaos for a change of scenery on “Small Town.”
Dominic Fike is back with a new single from his upcoming album How to Quit Smoking, and honestly, this track makes me so excited for it. “Small Town” is about running away, ending up in a small town after having struggles in a relationship, and settling down there. It sounds like escaping everything you know and starting over somewhere completely different.
Even though you’re away now, you’ve still been on someone’s mind. They’re still missing who you were, still thinking about the person you used to be even after you’ve packed up and disappeared. There’s something bittersweet about that idea—you can physically leave a place and a relationship, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you leave the memories or the people behind with you.
The track leans indie, with Dominic’s signature rap flow woven throughout and a really catchy, fun chorus that makes the whole thing feel incredibly easy to listen to. There’s a breezy quality to the production that makes you want to roll the windows down and just drive somewhere without knowing exactly where you’re going.
And I really love the dynamic here. The song feels good. It’s catchy, playful, and almost carefree, while the lyrics are telling a much less happy story underneath it all. It’s the kind of contrast that makes you want to sing along before you realize you’re singing about heartbreak, running away, and being missed.
Overall, “Small Town” is a really promising taste of what Dominic Fike has coming with How to Quit Smoking. It’s nostalgic without being overly sad, upbeat without pretending everything is perfect, and effortlessly catchy. If this is any indication of what the rest of the album sounds like, I’m already ready to pack a bag and hit the road.
