I wanna talk about Madonna and Charli.

“Danceteria” was already one of my favorite songs from Madonna’s fantastic new album, CONFESSIONS II. Somehow, Charli XCX has made it even more iconic with their new remix and collaboration, “Danceteria Afterhours.”

The original song—and, to some extent, the remix—pays tribute to the New York City club of the same name. Danceteria helped launch Madonna’s career and attracted artists ranging from East Village visual artist Kenny Scharf to Talking Heads legend David Byrne. Madonna captures the club as an infectiously fun and creatively energizing place.

Charli brings that history into more recent eras. Her first verse recalls performing at underground raves she discovered through Myspace at 15. Her second jumps to 2015, around the time she connected with producers and friends A. G. Cook and SOPHIE.

Names are essential to “Danceteria.” Madonna’s original track is packed with them, and Charli adds A. G. Cook, SOPHIE, and Le Couteau Jaune, a noise-performance group she met in 2007. These shout-outs honor the artists while building the song’s chaotic, exciting atmosphere.

The beat is infectious, and the creatively panned vocals sound incredible through headphones. This song was built for the dance floor, but it remains just as enjoyable at home.

According to Madonna and Charli, everyone inside Danceteria is a work of art. They certainly belong on that list.
