“Philly Heathens” delivers urgency and purpose, while “Am I Wrong” becomes a messy drill experiment.
Meek Mill’s career has been a strange one. Though I still consider him a popular and enticing rapper, his release schedule has become odd. He has not released a new solo album since 2021, leaving fans with scattered singles, collaborations, and random drops.
Last night, two Meek tracks leaked, prompting him to release “Am I Wrong” and “Philly Heathens” himself.
“Am I Wrong” is easily the messier record. Meek delivers playful bars over a drill-inspired flip of Nico & Vinz’s 2014 hit of the same name. The production sounds dated and poorly assembled, while his attempt at singing lands terribly. Since this may be an older leak, its age could explain some of those questionable choices.
“Philly Heathens” fits Meek much better. Over a dramatic beat, he uses a steady, urgent flow to discuss street violence, grieving parents, destructive decisions, and the young lives lost throughout Philadelphia. The writing sounds serious, personal, and motivated by concern for his city.
The two tracks deliver completely different results. “Philly Heathens” deserves a streaming release, while “Am I Wrong” probably should have remained wherever it leaked from.
Whether you enjoy both records or not, hearing Meek release music again is worth appreciating.
