Scottie the 3rd Brings Slick Bars to “RONDO – Live at Dark Horse”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

A confident jazz-rap gem about leveling up, delivered over production worthy of its own glass frame.

Scottie the 3rd sounds like Mac Miller reincarnated. It’s unbelievable to listen to, but he also has his own style, keeping his music fresh and giving you more to appreciate than a familiar voice. His performance, “RONDO – Live at Dark Horse,” is a good example of that.

Originally a song from his album ’2016,’ this version was recorded with collaborator JE and a jazz band in Nashville. They went to tape for a classic sound, giving the performance an approach that suits the music.

“RONDO – Live at Dark Horse” features a gorgeous instrumental with a smooth tempo, a luxurious feel, and just enough knock. I say we go ahead and put it in a glass frame now. The whole thing sounds like it should be playing somewhere with comfortable chairs and drinks I probably shouldn’t order twice.

Over it, Scottie delivers bars about dismissing his haters, leveling up, and getting money. What makes his bars special is how he delivers them. His slick flow keeps everything moving, while the punchlines make sure you don’t get too comfortable and miss what he’s saying. He sounds confident in this setting, and the performance stays fresh throughout. I rock with it.
