YG and Ty Dolla $ign Revisit Their Early Days With “Relax (2009)”

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

YG does not sound OK on this track.

I still can’t believe YG and Ty Dolla $ign were the dudes behind “Toot It and Boot It.” Younger me heard that s**t everywhere and apparently never bothered checking the credits. Turns out, their working relationship stretches back even further. “Relax (2009)” lets us hear what they were cooking before either became the artist we know today.

Ty Dolla $ign understood the assignment. He gives the track soulful vocals and enough bedroom energy to make the intention clear. He also sounds a whole lot like R. Kelly’s sick-ass here. The resemblance is distracting, but Ty’s performance is strong, and he already has the ability to carry a melody.

YG sounds like he received a completely different assignment. His signature LA accent is barely recognizable, and the strange vocal effects leave him sounding a little goofy. To me, the performance feels more concerned with getting attention than sounding good. I kept waiting for the version of YG I actually enjoy to show up.

Still, I appreciate the chance to hear these two as young pups. It’s an interesting throwback, even if Ty’s contribution does most of the heavy lifting.
