RGM RATING (??????????)

A slick mixture of sexy soulful sounds and captivating reflective lyrics.

English R&B singer and songwriter Jorja Smith creates music that reflects her soulful, jazzy vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and retro sound. Her debut studio album Lost & Found received critical acclaim after its release in 2018 and hit number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. In addition to her success, Smith also won the Brit Critics Choice Award the same year. She’s since been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and, in 2019, was named Best British Female Artist at the Brit Awards. The track “Bussdown” appears on her new album Be Right Back and as a single release. “Bussdown” is also accompanied by a music video.

The soulful and sexy track featuring South London rapper Shaybo delivers a message about pride as Smith sings about being an independent and proud woman who can take care of herself, while also addressing the power dynamic between men and women. Her vocals stay light and alluring, but her presence is absolutely a commanding force. The sound for “Bussdown” is very laidback and compliments the vocals nicely with its elements of funk and soul. Don’t let the track’s laidback vibe fool you; there’s plenty of captivating lyrics and swag to keep you from forgetting “Bussdown.”
