Rod Wave Re-releases “Numb”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’ve got a big secret to share with you. Despite all the other albums out there, the one I found myself playing the most last year was Rod Wave’s Nostalgia, not For All The Dogs or Utopia. What really drew me in was Rod’s ability to delve into everyday themes while delivering incredibly soulful vocal performances. And now, to kick off 2024, Rod Wave has re-released “Numb,” a track he originally dropped back in 2018.

Rod Wave doesn’t come across as overwhelmingly melancholic on this track (Woah). In “Numb,” he exudes confidence about his desired companionship and appears prepared to confront anyone who doubts him. Yet, there are instances where he acknowledges struggling with personal addictions and experiencing feelings of loneliness.

What’s intriguing about “Numb” is how it transitions between gritty and gentle moments seamlessly. The beat carries both a dynamic energy and a hard-hitting intensity. Rod delivers rugged rap verses for the most part, but he also introduces emotive vocals that bring the track to a poignant conclusion. Overall, this banger gets my seal of approval.
