In Other Unsurprising News, the Sun Rises Once Again.
Right now, it feels like almost every music headline ties back to Kendrick Lamar. Whether it’s Drake’s lawsuit against UMG over “Not Like Us” or people shouting “MUSSTARRRD” all over social media, we’re clearly living in King Kendrick’s world. What stands out to me is how much of the conversation centers on Kendrick’s new album, GNX. And honestly, that’s how it should be—letting the music itself take center stage amidst all the noise.
Kendrick Lamar’s GNX album is on track for a strong debut, projected to sell around 325k units in its first week. This is a notable increase compared to Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, which sold 295k units during its 2022 debut week. However, it still falls short of Kendrick’s record-setting 2017 album, DAMN, which had a massive first-week sale of 603k units.

At first, I was a bit disappointed by the initial projections of 295k in first-week sales. But now, after taking a closer look at this year’s record sales, it’s clear just how impressive 325k is. Considering there was little to no promotion and the album dropped unexpectedly on a Friday, it’s time to give Kendrick his due respect. These numbers are extraordinary.
Kendrick Lamar has had an all-time great year.
