Lil Baby Scores In “Touchdown”

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Lil Baby is out here looking like Anthony Richardson.

Lil Baby’s new album, titled WHAM, is coming in hot. He recently announced its release date, along with a few of its features, including major names like Young Thug, Future, and 21 Savage. In the lead-up to the release, Baby has dropped a handful of singles, including “Insecurities” and “5AM.” I haven’t gone back to any of them. Yesterday, he also released a new single that I probably won’t return to: “Touchdown.”

Lil Baby sounds perturbed in “Touchdown.” Throughout the track, he cleverly weaves football metaphors to recount his past experiences, including his time hustling in the streets. He also doesn’t hold back his disdain for trends like people painting their fingernails, a subtle jab at modern culture, and emphasizes his readiness for all kinds of smoke, including black. I wonder who drank Baby’s apple juice.

The first thing that stood out about “Touchdown” is the production—it gives off old-school Gucci Mane vibes. While Baby’s delivery on the chorus is clear and easily my favorite part of the song, he leans into his signature mumble style in the verses. The upside is that he keeps a smooth flow, drops a few solid punchlines, and radiates confidence throughout, making the track memorable despite its flaws (I mean, we’re not supposed to praise mumble rap anymore, right?).

Should we all be afraid of an angry version of Lil Baby? B*tch, I think so.
