Ahead of the highly anticipated event, Lamar sat down with Apple Music’s Nadeska and Ebro Darden to discuss various topics, including his mindset going into the feud.
For Kendrick, the battle was always about competition. “My intent from day one was to keep the nature of it as a sport… I think a lot of people were putting rap on the back burner—you didn’t see that grit, you didn’t see that bite anymore,” he explained. He also emphasized his continued appreciation for battle rap and how it shapes his artistry.
From the moment Kendrick’s verse on “LIKE THAT” dropped, it was clear he saw this as a lyrical sport rather than a personal attack. However, once Drake referenced Kendrick’s wife in “Push Ups,” the rivalry took a darker turn.
