Technically, this is just as big as performing at the Super Bowl (If not bigger).
FIFA has officially announced that Future will perform at the World Cup opening ceremony tomorrow at SoFi Stadium before the United States takes on Paraguay. While that’s exciting news for rap fans, it also raises a very obvious question: Why Future?
Don’t get me wrong. Future is one of the most influential artists of his generation. His impact on modern hip-hop is undeniable. But when people think of family-friendly sporting events watched by millions worldwide, Future isn’t exactly the first name that comes to mind.
The performance will likely center around “Game Time,” his recent collaboration with Tyla that was created alongside FIFA. Thankfully, the song sounds like an authentic Future release rather than a forced sports anthem.
Beyond that, things get interesting.
Future’s biggest records often contain themes and lyrics that aren’t exactly designed for a global all-ages audience. “WAIT 4 U” seems like a safe bet. “Mask Off” could work with some adjustments (he can’t be saying “percocet” over and over again)? After those tracks, the possibilities start narrowing quickly.
Whether the decision makes complete sense or not, there’s no denying that seeing Future perform before a World Cup match will be one of the more memorable entertainment moments of the tournament… At least for me.
