The Grammys are expanding categories and updating eligibility rules ahead of the 2027 ceremony.
The Recording Academy has unveiled a series of rule changes and category additions for the 2027 Grammy Awards, placing a stronger emphasis on representation and genre-specific recognition.
Leading the announcements is Best Asian Pop Music Performance, a new category that will honor K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other Asian-language pop recordings. As artists from these genres continue to dominate charts, streaming platforms, and international tours, the category fills a gap that many fans and industry observers have pointed out for years.
In addition, the Academy is launching Best Latin Song, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album.
The Grammys also revised their Best New Artist eligibility rules. Instead of allowing artists to submit three times, the Academy will now permit up to four submissions.
While that may sound like a small adjustment, it acknowledges that career growth isn’t always immediate. Some artists require multiple years to break through, and the new rule gives them additional time to earn recognition.
Taken together, these updates signal an effort by the Recording Academy to broaden its reach and better reflect the diverse ways music is being created and consumed today.
