Vory remains one of the most talented artists out there.
Can we all be real with ourselves? If Vory didn’t get into legal trouble a few years ago, I genuinely think he would be a bigger artist today. That situation left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths and clearly affected his momentum. The good news is that talent doesn’t just disappear, and on his new project, DONDADA, Vory reminds us that he still has plenty of it.
Vory spends much of the album straddling the line between being all over the place and knowing exactly who he is. He gives us slow, emotional bangers like “TALK TO YOU” and “SOBER,” but he also delivers ignorant records like “SIAMESE” and “RUBI ROSE,” which lean much harder into trap. Vocally, he moves between sly and aggressive approaches, but for the most part, that unmistakable tone remains intact.
Personally, I prefer when Vory taps into his emotional side. There’s something about his voice that can make your soul melt when he really locks into a feeling. Still, his ear for music is so strong that even when he switches lanes, he usually makes it work.
Lyrically, I love how he balances the lifestyle of a young dude making money, enjoying women, and having a good time with someone who genuinely seems to value love. Considering his recent history, I can’t help but think some of the deeper material comes from those experiences.
All in all, DONDADA, which features an interesting guest list that includes Dame Atlas, 2 Chainz, Trae The Truth, and Domani, is one of the most musically satisfying projects you’ll hear this weekend.
