1900Rugrat is one brave soul.
When the story of hip-hop is told to the aliens who colonize Earth 100 years from now, one of its biggest turning points might be the moment Skrilla entered the picture. His style is so damn unorthodox and different that I don’t see the genre simply returning to normal after this. Today, he keeps that momentum going by releasing a remix of his breakout single, “N****a,” featuring the last person some listeners probably expected: 1900Rugrat, who is white.
That complication could have swallowed the entire collaboration, but 1900Rugrat finds a clever way around it. Rather than saying the N-word, he says the Ritz-word, allowing him to attack the record without crossing that line. More importantly, his performance works. He knives through the chaotic production with an effortless verse, using every bar to remind us what a reckless troublemaker he can be.
The funniest part is that 1900Rugrat somehow brings a little normalcy to a song that sounds completely insane. Who would’ve thunk it?
