You gotta be very happy for Tinashe…

More than a decade after releasing Aquarius, Tinashe has finally entered the Billboard 200’s top 10.

Her new album, Popstar, debuts at No. 6 with 35,500 equivalent album units. The opening figure consists of 13.7 million on-demand streams and 22,000 pure sales, making the project both her highest-charting album and her first top-10 entry.

The final result is even stronger than expected. Early estimates placed Popstar around 20,000 units before an updated forecast raised that number to approximately 27,000. Tinashe ultimately cleared both projections and landed far above the No. 17 peak achieved by Aquarius in 2014.

That makes this milestone especially satisfying. Tinashe spent years dealing with creative frustration inside the major-label system before leaving RCA and taking greater control of her career. Albums such as Songs for You, 333, BB/ANG3L, and Quantum Baby allowed her to experiment freely while developing an audience that supported her without requiring constant mainstream validation.

Then “Nasty” happened. Its viral rise returned Tinashe to the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024 and reminded casual listeners that she had never stopped creating.

Popstar turns that renewed attention into a measurable career high. A No. 6 debut would be impressive under any circumstances, but achieving it during an independent-minded second act makes it hit differently.

I’m so glad folks are giving Tinashe her flowers. She’s a damn good artist who has been slept on for way too long.
