Gunna Launches His ‘Splurge’ Era With “Pop It”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Gunna knows he’s the HIM right now.

Dudes who live by the street code, close your ears: Gunna might be my favorite rapper in the game right now. The music he has been making feels organic as hell, and he continues to succeed without much assistance from hip-hop’s biggest names. With his upcoming album, Splurge, on the way, Gunna has officially opened the era with “pop It.”

The lowercase styling may make the title look modest, but the actual record is far from some small s**t. “pop it” runs on triumphant, oversized trap production that sounds built for Eddie Murphy’s palace on the “Remember The Times” video. Gunna uses that backdrop to brag about choosing between luxury whips, skipping the chauffeur, spending freely, and pulling women who are badder than Ken Paxton’s chances of winning Texas. As expected, his slippery flow does most of the damage. He glides across the beat so smoothly that it sounds like he has the entire instrumental on a leash.

Following 2025’s The Last Wun, Splurge is supposed to represent another creative step. I’ll be there for that step as soon as it occurs.
