KATSEYE’s label needs to let Lara write more songs, because “Unloveu” is their best song yet.
Previously a Target-exclusive bonus track on KATSEYE’s EP WILD, “Unloveu” is the first KATSEYE song written by a group member. It’s an ode to Lara Raj’s first heartbreak when she was sixteen years old, and it is absolutely stunning.
Lara’s voice soars on this track. Her whistle register is flawless, and this is the most it’s ever been showcased. All of the girls sound better than ever. Sophia’s belting is to die for on the chorus, and Yoonchae delivers her most powerful vocals yet. Daniela and Megan also sound lovely. I would have loved to hear Manon on one of the verses, but she’s still on hiatus.
This is the best song lyrically that KATSEYE has ever put out. Known for songs like “Gnarly,” “Internet Girl,” and “Hootie Frutti,” they aren’t necessarily known for emotional ballads. The few ballads they do have still don’t have lyrics like this, and it’s especially meaningful coming from a member.
I sincerely hope that this marks a new direction for KATSEYE where the members get more creative control over their work. They already have immense singing and dancing talent, and “Unloveu” proves that at least Lara can write.
I’m very glad that “Unloveu” has made it to streaming, and I’m looking forward to what comes next from the group.
