I really wanted to love Olivia Rodrigo’s new Christmas song.
Olivia Rodrigo has fed us this year. Between you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, “Book of Love,” “serena joy,” the “expectations” remix with Chappell Roan, the Daisy Chain Festival, and the Unraveled Tour, Livies have had a great year. Unfortunately, it couldn’t be a perfect year, even for Olivia Rodrigo. “take me home (4 christmas)” is unfortunate proof that even Olivia Rodrigo can make a song that’s just okay.
“take me home (4 christmas)” isn’t terrible. I like the verses, and the music video is very fun. The chorus is bland, though.
There’s a lot of personality in the lyrics, which is somewhere that Olivia almost always excels. On the track, Olivia wants her boyfriend to commit to taking her to his parents’ house for Christmas so she can meet the family. This would prove his commitment and sincerity about their relationship. The video details this as well. It’s very funny.
I wasn’t offended by “take me home (4 christmas)” by any means. It was just fine. I’d probably like it better if I had just encountered it on the radio, but Olivia is so talented, and her 2026 output has been stellar, so I had high expectations that unfortunately weren’t met. I hope that the track grows on me. The lyrics are very fun.
