Nothing But You – I Love You On My Own (Album Review)

I’ve always appreciated a musical act with a unique voice, which is probably why I am in awe by Nothing But You. Her ability to switch her voice between aggressive and gentle is astonishing, and how she is able to make her words come alive is invigorating. In her newest release, “I Love You On My Own,” the Japanese-American star gives us 11 tracks that contain a little bit of jazz, some blues, and lots of high-level emotions!

5. TAKE ME AWAY

With a majority of the songs on this album focusing on pure soulfulness, “Take Me Away” feels a bit more lively, as it mixes riveting piano-play with this explosive pop sound throughout. Nothing But You plays the instrumental’s fierce leader, feeding off the energy of it and giving us this spirited performance. For the most part, her words are comforting, and throughout, her vocals are sturdy enough to hold up an entire office building.

4. LIPS

“Lips” is a track that is unapologetic about its sensuality.

Accompanied by this numbing sound production-wise, Nothing But You serenades us with these hypnotizing vocals that scream out to you “please hold me tight, tonight.” I can feel the urgency in every word she delivers, making it an infectious track that finds a way to toy with your emotions.

3. FREEDOM

“Freedom” has a similar sound to “Lips”: It’s passionate, it’s brash, and has this bluesy sound attached to it. As usual, Nothing But You’s vocals are absolutely marvelous on it, as she morphs between mellow and inflammable from start to finish.

I love Nothing But You’s vulnerability when it comes to the topic of love. She doesn’t back away from it, and isn’t afraid to show her raw/unapologetic feelings if need be.

2. BEAUTIFUL DAY

I personally love “Beautiful Day” for its laidback sound. On it, Nothing But You brings out some dazzling vocals, ultimately delivering this animated gem that contains vast details of the wonderful activities that go on around her. I absolutely love how the vibes of the instrumental matches the boisterous style of singing Nothing But You is doing, and enjoy the fiddling she’s doing with various sounds.

“On My Own” is absolutely stunning! With the instrumental giving off this exotic vibe, Nothing But You serenades the listeners with these passionate words that sorta hypnotizes, causing you to inquire about the exotic benefits that come with love. But once again, its Nothing But You’s vocals that will catch your attention, as she does an amazing job of seesawing her voice from high-pitched to low-pitched pretty seamlessly.

For eleven songs, these elements are accompanied by powerful topics revolving around love, positivity, and sensuality, making “I Love You On My Own” a must-listen for music enthusiasts everywhere.
