You’ve likely heard of Sofía Valdés, the 24-year-old Panamanian pop singer-songwriter who pours her heart into every song she creates. As a proud Latina, her influences span from traditional Cuban music to English rock bands to Brazilian pop, all of which shaped her musical identity from a young age. Growing up immersed in these diverse sounds has undoubtedly impacted her unique style.
After the success of her album Ventura, Sofía Valdés has continued to captivate listeners with a string of singles and EPs, all amassing impressive streams. Her most recent EP, Silvia, dropped in 2023. Now, Sofía is kicking off 2024 with her latest single, “How’s That Working Out,” featuring Cuco, a prominent figure in the Latin music scene. Together, they tell the story of a love that’s run its course, embodying the roles of exes who can’t quite let go and are still caught up in watching their former partners’ lives unfold.
I enjoyed Cuco’s unique style paired with Sofía Valdés’ lyricism on this track. Sofía’s lyrics are simple yet incredibly relatable, touching on emotions we’ve all felt after a tough breakup. The song is well-crafted, with an upbeat vibe that almost gives you that carefree, “skipping through a field” feeling you often see in movies. While this particular sound isn’t my personal favorite, I believe her fans and that niche audience will absolutely love it.
